WGF & strawberry grower Dave Murray spend Earth Day in School Garden

On April 22, 2011, Western Growers Foundation celebrated Earth Day with Marie Curie Elementary in San Diego and WG member Dave Murray (of Andrew & Williamson Fresh Produce).  “Farmer Dave,” as the students called him, talked about the importance of agriculture and a healthy diet.  He also brought more than 100 packages of fresh strawberries to share with the school.  In the above right photo, students are showing Dave the strawberries growing in their school garden.  The photo on the left shows students measuring and sharing their tomato and sunflower plants with WGF's Briana Lewis.

The garden at Curie Elementary is very impressive.  You can see more images from the garden and the event on our Facebook page here.

Marie Curie Elementary received a WGF garden grant in 2010 to purchase several fruit trees to add to their garden.  The garden at Curie is about five years old.  As you can see from the photos on Facebook, they have accomplished a lot in that short amount of time.  The students we met were very knowledgeable about gardening and asked "Farmer Dave" some thoughtful questions.
