Marblehead Garden celebrates 1st year

The school garden at Marblehead Elementary in San Clemente, Calif., celebrated its first year thanks to a grant from Western Growers’ Foundation. The foundation funded the garden with $1,500 in the Fall 2010 round of grants made possible by the Monsanto Fund. The garden is spearheaded by retired Marblehead teacher Stephanie Anfinson who now volunteers full-time for the garden program.

WG Foundation Administrator Briana Lewis helped celebrate the school garden’s first year of success at an event in early June. For only being in operation for one school year, this garden program is extremely well organized, tended and utilized. In recognition of all of Anfinson’s volunteer work and dedication, students and parents planted a tree near the garden in her name at Friday’s event.

In addition to the fruits and vegetables planted by the student, a butterfly garden has also been planted.  This has allowed the schools garden to be pollinated, and has illustrated the life cycle to the students.  The photos above of a caterpillar, chrysalis, and monarch butterfly were all taken in the Marblehead garden,
